I have a question! :D How do you manage to stay on schedule so well? I find it very hard to do, but you guys seem to do it easily. Any tips? (:
Mike: Happy | Bless You427 on August 5th, 2009 07:40 am (UTC)
First, there are two of us, and we take turns, which helps. We use a calendar [a la a specific schedule at the start of the round]. We constantly poke each other with twitters/emails/texts when the other was supposed to post something. Amy is on the East Coast, and I'm on the West, we do lots of emails.

There was a community (that will remain nameless) that prompted us to create lumos_lims because of how awful it was. We've both been burned many times by badly run lims and have a lot of pride in being high-quality moderators. Deep down we vowed to be awesome, and we hope that we've achieved a small bit of that :)

Thanks for the compliment, and good luck!

Oh wow, thanks for the compliment on our schedule-keeping skills!

... Mike pretty much summed it up well, though. We take turns, and we have a set-out schedule that helps. I think the fact that there are two of us helps the most, because we remind each other through twitter or e-mail when the other has forgotten something. Like, if I notice it's late on Wednesday and the reminder e-mail hasn't gone up, I'll twitter Mike to ask if he's remembered. Or if it's late on Monday, and I haven't put the results up yet, he'll twitter to remind me or ask if I need help.

It's a teamwork thing! :)

Hey guys, sorry to bother you again! (: I like the way the reminders are emailed and not posted in the community, I find it much easier to do and more effective. I'm thinking about using this idea on my own LIMS. My co-mod has doubts about it. :/ Did the participants react well to it? Do they mind giving their e-mails or something? Is it easier for you? (:

I'm really really sorry to bother you, I feel I'm so annoying! XD
Mike427 on September 14th, 2009 07:43 pm (UTC)
Don't feel annoying - it's an honest question.

1) We've only gotten positive responses from the email reminders.
2) A handful of people always refrain from giving their email address, and they are notified at the start that they will not receive reminders. It's usually not a problem as they enter on time.
3) It is SOOO much easier for us, rather than hunting down each persons journal and/or sending LJ messages. It's a bit harder than just posting a reminder to the community, but it keeps the spam down for people who are eliminated, just here for the voting, or already entered, etc.

Amy & I use a system of Google Documents and LJ posts to keep everything organized. We try to always use BCC when sending reminders, but sometimes we slip and send CC or TO. We don't share the email addresses with anyone else for any reason other than that.

Good Luck with your LIMS and /cheers/

Mike [and Amy]
